How many times have we heard a friend, family member or colleague say this at the beginning of a New Year. The New Year is a great time to focus on creating healthier habits, but why not focus on creating these habits with our children? New Year's is the perfect time to talk to your children about realistic goal setting and to start the year forming good, healthy habits.

Set Smart Goals

No matter what you decide as a family, ensure the goals you set are achievable. It’s a good idea to start small. For example, introducing one new vegetable, exercising once a week, if they have never exercised before. This ensures that children can see that the goal is easily achieved and keeps them motivated.

Set Goals as a Family

Talk to your child. Give your child a choice in choosing which goal they would like to focus on. Giving children autonomy will support their independence and confidence. It also helps them to feel in control of the choices they are making and encourages intrinsic motivation. Involving children in the decision-making and making the goals fun for the entire family can help turn these resolutions into long-lasting habits.

Make it fun

Why not set up a goal setting chart on the fridge to help children keep track of their goals. Reward your child by using the chart to give them a star/sticker when they are successful. You can even discuss planning rewards with your child for continuing to achieve their goals. For example, choosing a movie for family movie night or a visit to their favourite park.

New Years Resolution Ideas for children

  1. Practice Gratitude – a lovely bedtime routine, use the gratitude rock in our collections and ask your child what they are thankful for each day.
  2. Drink more water – use a water bottle to help your child measure how much water they are drinking every day and to try increase their intake.
  3. Try 1 new vegetable – use the Junior Genius Global recipe cards found in the Home Wellness Collection to encourage your child to try new foods and eat a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.
  4. Read a book – read a story with your child every day. Use the Captain Cutie Pie Book Series to foster a love of reading and teach your child important messages for children.
